Club of the Year 2013 - 2014 - President's Distinguised Club - 2015 - 2017Our next meeting will be held on the 21st of February 2018 at 7:00pm at Carlton Football Club. See you there!
At our last meeting...
Hazel, Aida, Surbhi and Sam receive their awards from Cleo. On a hot summers night, Carlton Toastmasters was again treated to another extraordinary meeting. Before the formal meeting had begun, we welcomed three new members to our club. For those who were not there, please welcome Haniff, Holly and Christian able who were duly voted in. After a great welcome by our President, Cleo, the meeting took an unusual turn, with an educational by Rebecca, who taught us all techniques on how to manage our fear of public speaking, during which, we all found out, the only member of the club who is not frightened by public speaking is Julie. Paul ably Toastmastered the slightly different meeting with a theme of What if? and introduced Julie to give us our word of the day – Oops and left us with a challenge, much better an oops, than a what if. The gauntlet had been thrown down The meeting then headed back into familiar territory with four fantastic speakers. Camilla intrigued us all with a presentation about an art piece from the Tate Gallery of Modern Art. Hazel then challenged us to “Be Vunerable, be Strong” an interesting take on the concepts of strength and resilience. Anthony then gave us a rendition of his speech “Stung” in the lead up to Division finals in March and Aida gave a test version of the speech she is planning on giving at Government House on Friday. The Educational and four speeches meant we did not have time for Table Topics, but were called upon to vote for the best speaker – a practice we are hoping in implement each meeting from now on. We then had our supper break. Darrell and Jez provided and excellent range of food for us to enjoy, while many stayed behind to give Andrew and Aida tips on their already excellent speaches. After the break, the speakers received some excellent evaluations from Sam, Haniff and Surbhi who all did a sterling job of fair and encouraging evaluations. We were again called upon to vote for the best evaluator, a practice we intend to make standard at our meetings. To round off the evening, Julie gave an enlightening grammarians report, and tried to give the umms and errs as well, before being reminded that John was due to give that report shortly, John then reported on the use of filler words and reminded us all to try to slow down to eliminate filler words in our speeches. Phil then gave the timer’s report, reminding all of us to keep to time.. Finally, Michael reviewed the night’s performance and gave a thorough and challenging General Evaluator’s report. All that was left to do was to congratulate the joint winners of the Best Speaker award – Hazel and Aida and the joint winners of the Best Evaluator award Sam and Surbhi. Who had to share the ribbons as we hadn’t anticipated a tie in the voting! The evening finished mostly on time with us all leaving into the warm summer night. See you all in two weeks! Our next Carlton Meeting is in two weeks time, the 21st of February. Please indicate your attendance on Easyspeak. See you then!
